How to insert table of contents in Word

To insert a table of contents (TOC) in a Microsoft Word document, you can use the built-in TOC feature. Here are the steps:

  1. Make sure your document is divided into sections using headings. You can use the built-in heading styles, such as Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on, or create your own custom styles.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the TOC to appear. This can be at the beginning of your document or in a specific section.
  3. In "References" tab click on the "Table of Contents" button.
  4. Select one of the built-in TOC styles or click on "Custom Table of Contents" to choose your own formatting options.
  5. Once you've selected a TOC style, it will be inserted into your document and automatically populated with the headings and page numbers from your document.
  6. If you make any changes to your headings or page numbers, you can update the TOC by clicking on the "Update Table" button in the "Table of Contents" menu.
  7. You can also customize the TOC by using the "Modify" option, you can adjust the font, font size and the distance between the items.

Please note that if you are using a version of Word earlier than Word 2007, the steps may be different.
